Merit Dedication
The Avalokitesvaras in the ten directions and all bodhisattvas vow to save sentient beings.
Calling upon their names allows for liberation.
The wise ones expound it diligently,
and those with affinity constantly recite it.
With a thousand recitations and
constant mindfulness of it,
fire causes no harm,
knives and weapons break instantly,
anger turns into joy,
and death revives.
Never be doubtful,
for the buddhas always speak the truth.
High King Avalokitesvara
alleviates all sufferings.
Faced with a fatal crisis,
the doomed shall live.
The words of the buddhas are always true;
thus they deserve our homage.
With a thousand recitations,
grave karma shall be eradicated.
Those with great merit and unwavering faith
single-mindedly chant this sutra and
dedicate its merit to all.
One thousand recitations
will eradicate grave karma.
This concludes the High King Avalokitesvara Sutra.
True Buddha School students will know that dharma sister Hanifa is the live translator for His Holiness Living Buddha Lian Sheng‘s dharma teachings. During group practice sessions, this means reciting the High King Sutra in English at high speed to keep up with the group saying it in Chinese! During these sessions, she uses this translation which is optimised for speed.
Like with the other translations of the High King Sutra shared on this site, this variation translation offers many interesting meanings that are true to the Chinese original. Translating the Chinese into English normally means that only parts of the meaning can be expressed, hence it is wonderful to see a collection of competent translations side by side for comparison. All are valid and you can choose whichever you wish to be your practice version.

This is not the True Buddha School translation of the High King Sutra but rather a translation made by Mahayana Buddhist, Minerva T.Y. Lee. It is included here for the enjoyment of comparisons, since it is impossible for any one version to fully express all meanings. By reading several, even though you might only practice one, you’ll have the broadest understanding of what the original text meant before translation.

High King Avalokitesvara Sutra Purification Practice Q&A
Q1: If one has already received empowerment for the High King Avalokitesvara Practice from Grandmaster in person, is one still required to receive empowerment for the High King Sutra Purification Practice?
A: No.
Q2: Ordinarily, when should one recite the sutra name Namo High King Avalokitesvara Sutra?
A: By reciting the sutra name in the morning on a daily basis, one’s entire body will be purified. This is an expedient practice which is not described in the sutra. It was transmitted to Living Buddha Lian-sheng by High King Avalokitesvara, who instructed him to recite Namo High King Avalokitesvara Sutra once, twice, three times, four times, five times, six times. Recite it six times; one recitation for the head, one recitation for the neck, one recitation for the upper abdomen, one recitation for the lower abdomen, one recitation for the thighs, and one recitation for the calves and feet. This is a very expedient method.
Q3: Under emergency circumstances, can one just recite the sutra name?
A: Yes. In the instruction to Living Buddha Lian-sheng, High King Avalokitesvara said, “The sutra is brief to begin with, but even so, in an emergency, it is not necessary to recite the complete sutra. One may just recite the sutra name Namo High King Avalokitesvara Sutra. Even if it is not an emergency, one can still recite the sutra name at any time! High King Avalokitesvara will hear you and come rescue you!
Q4: How does the bodhisattva emit light to bless one? The article states that light is emitted from the brow point of the bodhisattva. Does this mean one visualizes the bodhisattva’s brow point emitting light which shines on one’s six sections respectively? Does this practice require empowerment?
A:
- High King Avalokitesvara can emit light not only from the brow point, but from everywhere. As one performs six recitations of Namo High King Avalokitesvara Sutra, High King Avalokitesvara will emit light from the entire body which shines on all six body sections.
- This purification practice requires empowerment. One can request the remote empowerment.

Ten-Phrase Avalokitesvara Sutra for Prolonging Life
The “Ten-Phrase Avalokitesvara Sutra for Prolonging Life” is an abridged version of the “High King Avalokitesvara Sutra“, which originated from the time of King Gao Huan of the Five Dynasties. Sun Jingde, an officer who was responsible for guarding the treasury, committed a serious crime and was imprisoned to be executed. One day, he dreamed of a monk who advised him to recite the “High King Avalokitesvara Sutra” in order to escape the death sentence. After awakening from the dream, he followed the instructions and recited the sutra repeatedly. Finally, his death sentence was, in reality, lifted. Out of gratitude, he copied the scripture by hand and circulated it throughout the world. The “High King Avalokitesvara Sutra” was then widely circulated because of its efficacy. After being passed on to the Liu-Song Dynasty, the “High King Avalokitesvara Sutra” was simplified into the “Ten-Phrase Avalokitesvara Sutra for Prolonging Life“, thereby shortening the original complicated scripture into only ten sentences, namely:
Guanshiyin. Homage to the Buddha. With the Buddha as cause, with the Buddha as condition, through the Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha, I attain permanence, bliss, true self, and purity*. In the morning, I recite the name of Guanshiyin. In the evening, I recite the name of Guanshiyin. Every thought arises from mind. Every thought is not separated from mind.
*The four virtues of the Buddha’s Nirvana.
Venerable Master Sheng Yen believes that “extending one’s life” has two meanings:
First, to extend the life of one’s own physical body, and second, to continue the life of wisdom of Buddhism. Venerable Master Sheng Yen emphasized that these ten phrases of the sutra include the Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha. While reciting the Ten-Phrase Avalokitesvara Sutra for Prolonging Life, the reciters will also take refuge in the Three Jewels and become devout Buddhists. Therefore, when reciting the sutra, we should recite it continuously, even if the sufferings of illness and karmic obstacles are eliminated one by one and one feels that the body is at peace.
Furthermore, we must also have faith in the Buddha, follow the Dharma and respect the Sangha, and make a vow to let the Dharma and wisdom of the Buddha be passed on perpetually.
